Best Methods For Link Building
By: Pat Higgins
Link building is an important part of website promotion. It can affect your site's page ranking on search engines like Google, MSN, Yahoo, Alta Vista and others, and adds value to your site. The way to have your website ranking high in the search engines is to build good back links to it. Generally speaking, the more good quality links you have, the more popular your site becomes.
Sometimes you do not have to work hard at building links, as if other webmasters rate your site highly, they will want to link to it from their website, so it pays you to try and build a high quality site in the beginning. This is a way of gaining natural back links.
Most of the time, you will need to work hard at building back links and there are several ways to do this.
• Outsource your link building to specialised companies to whom you will pay a fee and they do the work for you. You must be careful though, as a poor company will provide you with low quality links and this may do you more harm than good. Only use reputable, recommended companies for although you may pay more for their services, you will get better links.
• Submit to free link directories. This may be a good way to start, but doesn't have much impact on your site rankings. Try to find high quality directories which are popular like DMOZ. This is classed as one-way link building, as you are putting your links on somebody else's site, without having their link on your site.
• You can also add links to blogs, press releases and articles. All these ways help bring traffic to your site.

• Use reciprocal linking. This means offering your link to other webmasters to put on their site in return for you listing their link on your site. An appropriate way to do this is to find someone who is selling a complementary thing to you that would be an add-on to your product. e.g. If you were selling motorbikes, a good link would be to a site selling crash helmets or leather biking suits. This is a good way to get quality links on sites that you choose.
• You can also leave comments on other people's blogs and link back to your site.
• You can write articles on topics and put a link in the resource box to your website.
• Use social networks such as Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, where you can post information and leave your link.
One-way links are the hardest ones to obtain but are the most effective, so it is worth spending some time and effort to get them.
